Settings & Personalization
Overview
Complete control of your privacy
We realize it’s important to have control over your information and privacy. The Account & Settings section allows you to choose how your information is displayed, how you want to be contacted, and your overall privacy preferences. To access these controls, click on the “Account & Settings” link available on the top right of every page.
Account Type
In addition to the free personal account, LinkedIn offers Premium memberships that provide additional ways to find and contact the right people. Several tiers of Premium memberships are available that offer more powerful search, enhanced communication features, and increased access to LinkedIn users. For further details or to purchase a Premium membership, click on the “Upgrade” button.
Profile Settings
These are all of the settings that control the information about you that is displayed to others.
My Profile
Your LinkedIn profile is often one of the first ways new contacts learn about you. Is it up to date? This will take you to the “Edit my profile” page to make changes.
My Profile Photo
Want a picture in your profile, or want to control who can see it?
Public Profile
Want to claim your Vanity URL (such as http://www.linkedin.com/in/yourname ) and control the elements of your profile that the public can see? For example if someone has come to your profile through a Google search, you can determine what your profile would look like to them (maybe you would only display your summary and current position, but hide past experience, education, websites, etc).
Manage Recommendations
Want to control your recommendations? Here you can show, hide, or even request a new or revised recommendation.
Personal Information
Name & Location
Want to change your display name or location?
Email Address
Want to add, remove, or confirm an email address so you can control which email accounts new contacts can find your account through? Also, you can change the primary email address where you receive your LinkedIn notifications and messages.
Your Password
Need to change your LinkedIn account password?
Email Notifications
Control which communications you want to receive and from whom.
Contact Settings
What kind of messages, requests, and offers do you want to receive? This section ensures that you are only contacted with relevant communications.
What type of messages will you accept?
This determines how you are open to being contacted.
- Introductions allow users in your extended network to contact you though users you know in common.
- InMail allows users not in your network to directly contact you about business and career opportunities.
- OpenLink messages are an option that Premium account holders have. They allow other LinkedIn users to directly send OpenLink messages to you free of charge.
Opportunity Preferences
Only want to be contacted about a few specific things and not others? If you are only interested in getting back in touch and potential business deals, check these boxes and others will be notified of your settings when they try and contact you. If they are trying to contact you regarding something that you have indicated you are not interested in, the system will prevent them from sending the message
Advice to users considering contacting you
Include comments on your availability, types of projects or opportunities that interest you, and what information you’d like see included in a request. To avoid unwanted contacts, do not include contact information, since your response will be visible to your entire network.
Receiving Emails
Want to change the kinds of emails and frequency that you receive from LinkedIn?
Invitation Filtering
Interested in controlling whose invitations you receive? You can fine-tune your settings to receive all invitations or restrict them to people who know your email address or are on your “Other Contacts” list. The “Other Contacts” list are contacts you have imported or manually entered. Review your “Other Contacts” list by clicking on the “Imported Contacts” link.
