Sharique, an accounting student with a real estate background, was looking to diversify his work experience through a summer internship. He wanted to find roles that would help him improve his communication and interpersonal skills so he could be an even stronger accountant in the long run. While Sharique was already an active networker on LinkedIn, he wanted to be even more visible to recruiters and hiring managers, so he upgraded to the Job Seeker Premium account.

First, Sharique focused on driving traffic to his profile. He brainstormed relevant keywords to use on his profile so recruiters searching for those terms could find him more easily. He measured his success based on the number of profile views he got. He also shared articles about new technologies to start conversations with potential connections.

Next, Sharique identified and contacted HR managers at each of his target companies. He used the InMails that come with Job Seeker Premium to introduce himself, explain his career goals, and inquire about available opportunities. ”Most recruiters did connect to me,” said Sharique. He even joined LinkedIn recruiter groups so he could learn exactly what recruiters are looking for in a candidate and respond to job postings accordingly. Sharique applied as a Featured Applicant and reported that he was contacted by over 90% of the companies he applied to.

As a result of his efforts, Sharique received interviews with top companies such as Microsoft, RIM, McCain Foods, Rio Tinto and Bell Alliant. He ultimately accepted an exciting position that allowed him to gain the communications skills he sought ? PR Coordinator at the Central Nova Tourist Association.

”I loved the role and was offered a chance to return. I interacted with people of different ages, cultures and backgrounds, increased my confidence, and overcame my fear of public speaking,” he said. Best of all, Sharique is still in touch with many of the new contacts he made at his other target companies and is being considered for future opportunities with them. Sharique's new skills even helped him get another job ? campus Brand Ambassador for Kaplan Test Prep. As part of his role, Sharique delivers speeches to audiences of over 100 students. ”I love it because I never get nervous anymore,” he says.

When asked what tips he has for fellow job seekers, Sharique advised ”make a solid plan for your job hunt and know what kind of job you really want.”
